Last week the leishmaniasis tests in the shelter were completed.
This is quite unique – all dogs in Cantinho da Milu shelter have been tested against leishmaniasis.
A few months ago first 200 dogs were tested and all those that gave positive results have been treated. Last week the remaining 200 were tested and the results should come soon.
It is a project conducted in partnership with the Observatory for Leishmaniasis (Observatório Português das Leishmanioses).
Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease in Portugal so it is important to have the dogs tested and treated before even the symptons appear. Like that, the disease stays controlled and the dogs can live for many years without ever developping symptoms, if only they take daily and inexpensive medication, Alpurinol.
